Care in Details

What are the uses and benefits of the hot and cold gel pack for elbow and arm pain?

What is it for?

Cold:

  • Arm and elbow pain
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer's elbow
  • Wrist sprain
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Tendonitis
  • Muscle tears
  • Inflammation

Hot:

  • Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cellular regeneration
  • Muscle contractures
  • Muscle cramps
  • Pain (without inflammation)
  • Improved muscular endurance
  • Improved blood circulation

What are the benefits?

  • Pain relief: with it you can apply cold in trauma injuries or tennis elbow, so that its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect relieves acute pain. You can also apply heat in cases where it is required to improve circulation to generate a sedative effect on muscle tissues.
  • Reduce inflammation: all inflammatory processes due to physical injuries are controlled with cold compresses, applied in a period no longer than 15-20 minutes. The gel pack will prevent burns if you know how to use it. The transmission of cold accelerates the reduction of inflammation in the soft tissues and at the same time reduces the pain that this generates in the elbow.
  • Accelerates recovery: this gel pack also correctly transfers heat to the tissues. By increasing the body temperature, you get more oxygen through the blood to the muscle fibers in the arms and elbows. In addition to oxygen, the blood transmits the nutrients they need to be healthy and regenerate faster.
  • Injury prevention: After a heavy work effort, such as lifting, pulling or pushing, the forearm and arm are likely to be sore. To avoid these annoying symptoms, it is recommended to apply cold with this gel pack that will help prevent exhaustion, inflammation and muscle pain due to the overload of work in your daily workday.
  • Compression: they have a thick Velcro strap that serves to keep the garment fixed and to give compression to the area of the arm or forearm where you want to apply cold or heat. Very practical to perform the PRICE method because the compression will help the cold gel to reduce symptoms such as inflammation and pain.
  • Improves sports performance: what is wanted with this gel pack is that you avoid at all costs injuries that may affect your training pace, which surely you need to be increasingly intense. Avoiding muscle fatigue and injuries is a useful way to stay active and keep improving in the face of an important competition for you. Use this bag if you have a possible recurring arm ailment.
  • Improves blood circulation: By placing heat on the skin, blood vessels and arteries dilate to carry more plasma to the muscle fibers and other tissues. When more blood reaches the muscles, they receive more nutrients and stay hydrated, making them more resistant to injury.
  • Cellular activation: although this is a slow and natural process in the body, when you apply heat for several minutes you favor and stimulate cellular activation to achieve benefits such as faster recovery for arm or elbow injuries.
  • Reduces bruises: if you use this cold gel pack you will make the bruise from a contusion does not expand and disappear in less time, since the blood risk will be cut so that no more bruises are made to lengthen the recovery.

When to use?

Cold therapy

  • When to apply cold? Unlike heat therapies, cold should be used from the moment the injury occurs, so you can avoid complications due to the progression of symptoms such as swelling, pain and bruising in the affected areas. But the person should know in what type of injuries can apply cold on their own, it is only recommended in soft tissue ailments such as muscles, tendons and ligaments, in this case those of the elbow, forearm and hand. Under no circumstances should the cold gel pack be placed on third degree sprains and fractures, especially when it is open and goes through the skin. Nor when there are open wounds such as knife cuts.
  • How to use cold? This bag has a special fabric that will protect the skin from burns, but you should always be careful not to use it directly from the freezer to the surface of the arm, allow the cold to descend a little for two or three minutes. An excellent way to apply cold is to apply pressure with the gel pack for 10 minutes, never exceed 15-20 minutes to avoid numbness of the arm. Once this time is over, remove the bag and allow a rest, then you can return to place the cold on the affected area as long as you notice that the pain and inflammation goes down. This cycle can be repeated two or three times a day.

Heat therapy

  • When to apply heat? Heat generates mainly a sedative effect and an increase in circulation, making it an excellent ally to recover from injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons of the arm and elbow. Once an injury has been suffered, heat can be used the following days to stimulate recovery and relieve pain from tendinitis, bursitis, strains and muscle contractures. It is also useful for relieving headaches, fever and toothaches as its shape can be used on parts of the body other than the arms or elbows.
  • How to use in heat? To heat the bag, boil 2 liters of water and introduce the bag once you have turned off the stove, for 15 to 20 minutes. You can also place it in the microwave for no more than 1 minute and it will be at a suitable temperature for use. After heating the heat pack, you should move the gel with your hands to better distribute the heat. Try not to use the heat pack for more than 20 minutes on the body.

Hot & Cold therapy

  • When to apply cold and heat? Cold and heat: their use is less frequent because they are only recommended in case of very strong traumatisms, in which the damaged cells must be activated by means of cold and heat. They are also used in circulatory difficulties such as varicose veins and ulcers, in which there is no proper venous return. This combination of therapies should always be suggested by a physician and applied by a physiotherapist. Once you have a diagnosis and they have outlined for you a way to use these therapies, then you can use the heat pack at home to continue with this same treatment in case of relapses or the presence of new muscle and joint discomfort.
  • How to use hot and cold? When it comes to contrast therapy, you must first start with heat and apply it for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on your pain threshold. In the first few times, you will feel a lot of heat and then the body will adapt, but you should not exceed the heat capacity that the bag can transfer. Then you should continue with the cold after a short rest. As we have already mentioned, the cold should not exceed 15 minutes to avoid numbness of the arm or forearm, take into account that the band has a protective fabric that will prevent burns. This whole cycle of cold and heat can be repeated two or three times a day, as long as you feel improvement and pain relief.

Also good on ankles – It’s good to get some cool relief on a sprain or sore muscle, and even better if it can stay put. I’ve only used it for cooling therapy, so can’t comment on using it with heat. I find that it works well for about 20 minutes, then it gets put back in the freezer for the next time I need it. Well made.

Effective – Its maleable and reusable which are two important features. It relieves the pain and the swelling on the applied area. This flexible ice pack is well made and its velcro straps are very convenient so it can be applied not only on the arms and elbows but in pretty much any area of the body without the need for holding it. Dont forget to use a cloth or use it above the clothes not to freeze/burn the skin. This ice pack made from nylon on the outside its resistant and long lasting.

Just clunky to use – I was thinking this would just strap on, and I could carry on doing stuff, but unless you're just sitting still it's not secure at all. This means it's basically no better than any other ice pack I own which is a shame.

Once used I clean with antibacterial spray or wipe and them place back in the freezer ready for next time. *** Cold therapy:- Cool for 1 hour in the freezer, keep the ice bags for chronic injuries at room temperature for 10 minutes before applying it to the area to be treated. *** Hot therapy:- Place the reusable heat pads inside the microwave for 30 seconds at 800W, The compression band you place the pack into is Velcro fastening, so it's totally adjustable and can be tightened or loosen whenever or where ever is needed. This product does feel like really good quality and that it is made to last. Only time will tell, so it's a product that I will have to update this review in time. Good when heat or cold is the way to ease pain – I am a big fan of using heat or cold as an efficient pain relief without needing medication. It works best when applied locally to the affected area but when you are trying to use around joints, it can be difficult. This pack gets around that simply and efficiently. What you get is a small gel filled pack that can either be chilled in a freezer or heated in a microwave. Once at the correct temperature it is put on the affected area and the provided elasticated strap wrapped around to hold it in place. Because of this method, it is important to make sure the pack is not very cold or hot to avoid causing further damage. Having used this periodically over the past month I have found it to be highly effective for easing my elbow joints and allowing me to recover faster and without tablets. For this reason, I recommend this pack - especially as it is reusable many times over.

Effective Ice pack - works well for the elbows – I really like this ice pack. I pop it in the freezer for a few hours, it has an insert which you put it in and then the main wrap which you can wrap around the elbow and it lasts for 30 minutes or more and I can use it on both elbows , one after the other and not still having it cold. Initially it was tricky to try and wrap it around myself and needed a hand but over time I have figured out a way. It is not the easiest to do that but I have managed. Overall it works really well, as I suffer from golfers/tennis elbow, this really helps me and it works well.

Not just for elbows and arms – I’m not sure why this is aimed at arms and elbows in the product title as it can be used for all areas of the body, in actual fact it’s not great for elbows as it isn’t shaped to suit. The packs take a while to get down to a cold temperature so I pop it in the freezer before I play sport, then if I hurt myself (which is relatively frequently) it’ll be ready for use. I have had it in the freezer for up to 5 hours and it hasn’t frozen, I haven’t tried for longer but I get the impression that it won’t go solid. The pack is reasonably thick so it stays cold for a good amount of time - I haven’t tried it for heat but I don’t see why you wouldn’t get similar results. Happy to recommend..

works alright for wrist – I use this for my wrist tendonitis. It freezes up pretty quickly. The ice bag can be used for hot or cold wrap. The cold therapy works really well on my wrist and it calms my injured tendon very quickly. The shape is like a whole pack and it is not the easiest to wrap. I normally will ask my husband to help. It has a fabric wrap that can keep the ice bag cool.

Elbow compression gel kit. – I ordered this product as I have been diagnosed with tennis elbow and other than pain relief and exercises there is nothing else that can be done. Nice packaged and well branded product inside a sealed box, all items 'Premium Gel Packs' logo and branding throughout which is different to the FeelRecovery logo in pictures. Supplied with pull string nylon bag which is perfect to store gel packs, ice bag compress and pad when not in use. Gel packs are really easy to use, put in freezer for 3 hours for cold compress or heat in microwave for 30 seconds for warm compress. Both options work well but best natural anti-inflammatory relief I get is from cold compress, using gel packs straight from freezer. Only issue I have it is difficult to strap into place on your self as really needs two hands. Overall, excellent hot and cold reusable compression kit. I would recommend this product.

Great support for my rehab – These are cool. I do love the fact that you can do both hot or cold. The kit comes with a bag to store and carry your pack. The cold does take a few hours to get to the ideal temp. The strap is great and holds tight. Good product Follow me on here daily reviews and/or answering questions on the products reviewed

Simple and effective – This is a great product to use for bruises and sore joints. I ordered this as my husband loves to play sports and I have 3 boys so have lots of sports injuries. This is good for both heat and cold comfort treatment. It's a bit tricky to wrap around your elbow as it is made straight. You will need someone’s assistance to put the strap on your hand especially and you cant bend your hand like shown in the picture. It is easier to put it on something straight like the calf or the legs. This is a simple and effective way to relieve pain from sports injuries. I have taken off 1 star just because it doesn't wrap as tightly on the elbows as shown in the description but for other areas, it serves its purpose well.

Good gel pack with insulated carrying bag – I’ve bought gel packs several times in the past and they have been very good, but this one is a cut above the rest. It consists of: A reusable gel pack which can be put in the freezer for cold therapy. An ice pack sleeve which has elasticated / adjustable straps with Velcro fastenings which allows you to comfortably secure it around the injured body part (e,g, elbow knee, wrist). A grey gel pack sleeve. A draw-string insulated bag to carry your cold pack in. It is lined with reflective and slightly quilted material which keeps the pack cold / hot for quite a while. Overall, I think this is a good idea and the insulated bag is a great idea as you can use it while travelling. The gel pack is quite large which is good, and the sleeve is easy to put on, comfortable and also provides compression if needed. At the time of writing my review, the price was unavailable, so I am unable to comment on value for money, but I award five stars for design and functionality.

    DAVE COOKE

Provides good relieve for an ulnar nerve issue when heated. – Whilst technically sold as a compress wrap, the last thing my elbow needs is compressing. I have an exposed ulnar nerve and from time to time, particularly in cold weather, it becomes really painful. I recently found that putting it on a bean bag heated in the microwave helped, so thought I'd try this pack as it can be heated or cooled, wrapped lightly around the elbow. The instructions say heat for 30 seconds and then repeated additional ten seconds until the desired temperature is reached. I found that two and a half minutes was optimal, but had to remove it from the microwave every 30 seconds to squish the gel around to prevent it from developing hot spots. Inserting into its bag and the the sleeve was simple enough, it's held in place via velcro. Wrapping around the elbow loosely and securing via the stretch strap wasn't particularly hard even with only one hand, helped no doubt by being left handed and putting it on my right elbow. Resting the arm on a cushion keeps it steady, removing the need for another person to assist. I've been using it a while now and have found it has been very beneficial, the heat provides almost instant relief and even with a fairly loose strap it stays in place without slipping down the arm, at least when used over long sleeved clothing. It all seems well made, the gel pack is an appropriate size, the cover functional and soft and all the stitching looks fine. The carry bag is a bit oversized really, but does the job.

    Writes for fun

Value for money – The days of trying to tie a gel pack on my elbow with a towel are over. My tennis elbow flares up every now and then and I need to ice. This pack is perfect to keep tucked in the freezer so it’s ready when you need it and it says it can go in the microwave as well. The elasticated strapping is easy enough to do on your own if you support the pack initially on a surface and it grips with the Velcro perfectly. The gel pack itself has quite a velvety feel to the plastic so hopefully it won’t get brittle and split too quickly. The useful thing is that when if finally does, you can still use the arm strap with a replacement gel pack. There’s a rather cheap sleeve for the gel pack when it comes out the freezer and this slides into the arm part of the wrap which has the strap on it. My pack came with its own useful cold bag so if you don’t use it straight away you can use it soon after but I don’t expect it will keep it cold for long. OR, you can use the cold bag for your shopping or keeping picnic food cold. At £9.99 this icepack is an absolute bargain.

Every part is so well-made! – This gel ice pack comes with a luxury-feel fabric velcro wrap, a large gel pack that can be used hot or cold, a gel pack sleeve cover and a big insulated drawstring bag. All the parts have the brand logo on, the whole product looks professional and luxury. Using the gel pack is easy. It could be microwaved for 30sec or more up to the temperature you require, time depending on how powerful your microwave oven is and the ambient temperature. It can also be frozen in the freezer to use it as a cold patch. The gel pack can be inserted into the velcro wrap, which comes with a long elasticated strap, you can pretty much wrap it on any part of your limps. For hot use, I feel the gel pack is a bit thin, I got about 5 minutes of warmth and then it will need to be reheated. However, for cold use this does work better and longer. Overall, this is a very well-made product, the pouch included is very high quality and a good bag to put everything away.
